Wouldn't it be great to have something more than a blackboard and chalk?
In late 2010, Avantage was approached by leaders within BCs
public education system with a clear problem. The current technologies and learning management systems (LMSs) that
facilitate “online” and “technology enhanced” learning do not reflect the way
students’ appropriate technology into their digital lives. Designed for an era
before the advent of social computing, such tools commonly come with some key
disadvantages: poor adoption by teachers and students, rising licensing costs,
and a poorly designed user-experience.
Our education partners decided that the time right for a new
approach to deploying technology in schools. What was required was a platform
that was conceived by and designed by students and educators themselves.
Perhaps most importantly, they wanted a platform that can grow and evolve with
them as they move toward the programme for 21st Century Learning .
What is a Collaborative Learning
Platform?
Avantage’s Collaborative
Learning Platform (CLP) was built with the input of administrators,
teachers and students. It is a “disruptive” social computing tool that supports
and extends student/teacher interaction within and beyond the classroom. Designed to close the gap between
differentiated and integrative approaches to learning, the platform not only
provides customized student “dashboards”, but also virtual classrooms that
teachers/instructors can modify to suit their pedagogical needs.
Because it is built with Microsoft
SharePoint 2010, it offers the advantage easy integration with existing
systems. It also has the advantage of being able to draw on related Microsoft
technologies including cloud-based services, productivity tools (Office).
